Web site error messages are most often caused by errors existing on the given site but they can also be caused by computer and browser configuration. For browsers, the current version of Netscape Communicator is the most accomodating and fastest loading. Microsoft Internet Explorer is next, and there are many older versions of each that are still in use. Older versions of either will not provide the services needed on many web sites. There are also many other browsers in use that will cause various problems. A web site service currently becoming very common is "Java Script", used for multi stage buttons, images, and other functions. Communicator and Explorer are "Java" and "Java Script" enabled by default. With Java disabled, many functions may not work and can cause error messages. A sample "error message", usually the fault of the web site is posted just below. Java can be "Disabled" or "Enabled" as explained below . . . ![]() In Communicator find these options by cliking the upper left "Edit" menu, then "Preferences". Click the "+" to open more functions. The last listed item on the menu, "Advanced" contain the Java options.
Microsoft Internet Explorer options are similar but a little less straight forward. You click on the upper left "View" menu, then on "Internet Options". This produces a menu with a series of upper tabs. The functions we are discussing are found mostly on the "Advanced" tab, along with a total of nearly 50 options. The Java options are near the end of this list of functions. Now that the current MS Internet Explorer is an integral part of Windows, you can access these same tabs and list of "Advanced" funcions by clicking the "Start" menu, "Settings", "Control Panel", and finally the "Internet" icon.
![]() Another error due to MS Internet Explorer failing to recognize a plugin properly. This happens commonly on certain plugins that Netscape easily handles. And there are Explorer functions that Netscape doesn't recognize, but they are few. So just what plugin do you need at a given time? Do as most due, go to the Microsoft and Netscape sites and try to figure it out. Plugins number in the hundreds and the number is growing almost daily.
![]() A few other common web site errors . . . if you click on a "dead" link (non existing source) , or type in a "bad" URL (Uniform Resource Locator) address you will receive the following error message:
