About the Internet and World Wide Web (WWW)

The internet

The internet (ARPANET back then) was originally designed in the 1960s by the United States military. It was developed to withstand nuclear attacks. The Department of Defense wanted to have a network of computers that could easily exchange information.

Within the next 20 years the interest in the internet started to increase rapidly but it wasn't until the 1990s that it exploded into a commercial haven. The last few years is where the traffic really started to increase beyond anyone's expectations. You can now access the internet at libraries, schools, work places, cafe's, etc. You don't even need your own computer to get on the internet.

You can find just about anything on the internet ranging from information to products, and you can even locate long lost family members or friends. This is just the beginning too. The internet has a long way to go, and you're sure to find many new things happening within the next few of years.

Get me out of here

The World Wide Web (WWW)

The World Wide Web, originally developed by CERN Laboratory in Geneva, Switzerland, is a (world wide) network of computers where you're able to get and share information on just about anything. This information can be in the form of text, graphics, images, sound, multimedia, etc.

All the information is connected via hypertext documents. HTML (Hypertext Markup Language) is what allows you to link between pages by what is called a hyperlink. The pages you visit each have there own address which is called a URL (Uniform Resource Locator). The URL is actually the path to the file (page). It includes the file name, the directory name, the server name, and the protocol HTTP (Hypertext Transfer Protocol). A protocol is a set of standards used from which computers can communicate with each other. HTTP allows computers to transfer hypertext files over the Internet. Thus, when your surfing the Web, the computer that is communicating with yours is using the HTTP protocol to transfer files you request to be viewed by your browser on your computer. A browser is a piece of software that allows you to view web pages. As you can see, everything connects like a strange, but working puzzle...

Keep in mind . . . the Internet, or World Wide Web could be described as the world's largest library, or better yet the world's largest city. And like all cities it contains some of the best . . . and some of the worst, x rated sites and worse, just like many cities. If you are concerned about some of the bad things around, just stay out of that part of town. And for the kids, if they are taught good from bad, right from wrong, they will probably be OK too.
