Cell phone terminology
EDGE
(Enhanced Data rates for Global Evolution) An enhancement to the GSM and TDMA digital cellular phone systems that provides data transmission up to 384 Kbps. Like cellphones in general, the EDGE service is more ubiquitous for mobile users than searching for Wi-Fi hotspots; however, data rates are much lower than Wi-Fi. To obtain the service, you have to add an EDGE modem to your laptop and sign up with a cellular phone provider that provides it such as Cingular Wireless.

GSM
(Global System for Mobile Communications) A digital cellular phone technology based on TDMA that is the predominant system in Europe, but is also used around the world. Developed in the 1980s, GSM was first deployed in seven European countries in 1992. Operating in the 900MHz and 1.8GHz bands in Europe and the 1.9GHz PCS band in the U.S., GSM defines the entire cellular system, not just the air interface (TDMA, CDMA, etc.). As of 2000, there were more than 250 million GSM users, which is more than half of the world's mobile phone population.

GSM phones use a Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) smart card that contains user account information. Any GSM phone becomes immediately programmed after plugging in the SIM card, thus allowing GSM phones to be easily rented or borrowed. SIM cards can be programmed to display custom menus for personalized services.

GSM provides a short messaging service (SMS) that enables text messages up to 160 characters in length to be sent to and from a GSM phone. It also supports data transfer at 9.6 Kbps to packet networks, ISDN and POTS users. GSM is a circuit-switched system that divides each 200 kHz channel into eight 25 kHz time slots.

WAP
(1) (Wireless Access Point) See access point.

access point A base station in a wireless LAN. Access points are typically stand-alone devices that plug into an Ethernet hub or switch. Like a cellular phone system, users can roam around with their mobile devices and be handed off from one access point to the other.

(2) (Wireless Application Protocol) A standard for providing cellular phones, pagers and other handheld devices with secure access to e-mail and text-based Web pages. Introduced in 1997 by Phone.com (later Openwave Systems), Ericsson, Motorola and Nokia, WAP provides a complete environment for wireless applications that includes a wireless counterpart of TCP/IP and a framework for telephony integration such as call control and phone book access.

WAP features the Wireless Markup Language (WML), which was derived from Phone.com's HDML and is a streamlined version of HTML for small screen displays. It also uses WMLScript, a compact JavaScript-like language that runs in limited memory. Supporting both keypad and voice recognition, WAP is independent of the air interface and runs over all major wireless networks. It is also device independent, requiring only a minimum functionality in the unit so that it can be used with a myriad of phones and handheld devices.

Image resizing . . . many computer users are now into Digital Cameras, and have found in most cases the pictures produced by their camera are huge in size, like 640x480 pixels, 800x600 pixels and larger, which is as large or larger than the whole monitor screen. All much too large for e-mailing or most any other prectical use.

Thus they must be "resized", only to what size? Think about it, if your picture is 800x600, the same as your computer monitor screen resolution, the picture takes up the whole screen.
